The Commission of the European Union (EU) recently published a list of standards that can be used to demonstrate conformity with the essential requirements of its new directive as it relates to electrical equipment designed for use within certain specific voltage limits.

This recast Low Voltage Directive (LVD)has been in effect since April 2016. Electrical equipment is defined as any device designed for use with a voltage rating between 50 and 1000 V for alternating current, and between 75 and 1500V for direct current.

The ultimate goal of these new regulations is to improve quality, safety and transparency for electrical equipment throughout the EU. All electrical equipment manufacturers and distributors will have to abide by the new regulations. As a result of these changes, electrical equipment manufacturers need to make sure they are in compliance with the new classification rules.
