CE Marking Guidance

Many products which are traded on the single European Economic Area (EEA) have the letters 'CE' marked on them. The CE marking is required for many products and it clearly shows that all European Union (EU) safety, environmental and health requirements have been checked by the manufacturer. The CE marking also indicates that a product's complies with all EU legislation, which allows free movement of products throughout the European market. It is unclear how the recnet BREXIT departure will affect future CE markings in Britain.

There are five steps involved in how to place a CE marking on a product:

1) Identify the harmonised standards and directive(s) applicable to the product.

2) Each product has specific requirements that need to be checked.

3) Determine whether a Notified Body requires an independent conformity assessment is necessary.

4) Test the product, including a risk assessment, and check its conformity.

5) Draw up the required technical documentation and have available if requested by the relevant authorities.
